In 2024, Elly Grady, a Year 8 student at Kererū School, embarked on a journey to write a children’s book as part of an integrated extension programme. Guided by her extension teacher, Alison Marshall, Elly tackled every stage of the book-writing process, from drafting and crafting to revising and eventually publishing. Elly also developed the concept for the illustrations and liaised with her cousin, Isaac Dunn, who brought her vision to life as the illustrator. To add a unique touch, Elly used watercolour pencils to colour the pictures.
At the beginning of November, Cyclone Gabrielle was officially launched.
Elly’s impressive achievement has garnered widespread attention. She has been interviewed by Adam and Megan from The Hits, Hawke’s Bay Today, and Jesse Mulligan from Radio New Zealand.
The first print of the book raised funds for Kererū School, demonstrating Elly’s generosity and commitment to her community.
Proceeds from the second print will be shared among:
-
Elly’s high school education
-
The Cancer Society
-
Illustrator Isaac Dunn, in recognition of his contribution
